What is and isn’t scored
One ranking, used everywhere on the site.
What it scores. Your handicap, which sets how much sole width and forgiveness count against spin control and launch; your swing speed; your budget; and how new the model is. Each wedge in our catalog gets a match score out of 100 with the reasons behind it, and the three highest are shown.
What it does not score. Our ranking does not choose lofts, bounce grinds or gapping for you. There is no rule for them, and this page does not invent one. It also does not read your tempo, your miss or your ball flight for wedges. The score is how well a wedge model suits your handicap, speed and budget, so treat it as a short list to try, with a fitter or the maker’s guide for the numbers on the sole. Prices shown are launch prices from our catalog, not today’s.
Will it tell me which lofts, bounce or grind to buy?
No. Our ranking does not choose lofts, bounce, grinds or gapping for you: it has no rule for any of them, and we have not invented one for this page. It ranks wedge models, not the loft or grind you would order. Once you have a model in mind, a club fitter or the maker’s own guide is the place to settle those, and our full fitting’s wedge section is a starting point, not a gapping chart.
How does my handicap change the wedges?
It is the biggest part of the score. Each wedge lists the handicaps it suits, and it scores more when yours sits near the middle of that range (up to 25 points). Sole width is next: from a handicap of 15 up, a wide sole scores 15 points because it forgives, and any narrower sole scores 5. Under 8, a narrower sole scores 15 and a wide one 3. In between, sole width is neutral. Then spin: under a handicap of 12, a high-spin wedge scores 10, mid 6 and low 2. From 12 up, the ranking looks at launch instead, and a high-launch wedge scores 8 and any other 5. Where our catalog has a forgiveness rating (from a handicap of 15) or a spin control rating (under 8) for a wedge, it adds up to 10 more points; many wedges have no rating yet, so it scores nothing for them.
Do swing speed and budget matter for a wedge?
A little each. Every wedge lists the driver swing speeds it suits, and it scores up to 10 points for how near yours sits to the middle of that range. A wedge whose range misses your speed by more than 8 mph is left out. A budget keeps only wedges priced at or under the top of the band, and the ones that fit earn 10 points. On the two lower bands (under $300 and $300–600), a model from 2022 or earlier can earn up to 4 points as a value buy. Prices shown are launch prices from our catalog, not today’s.
Does a newer model score higher?
Yes, a little: up to 10 points, rising a point for each year from 2016, so a 2026 model gets the full 10 and a 2020 model 4. A discontinued wedge loses points, more the older it is. That is the whole of the age part of the score: it does not know how a wedge’s grooves wear or whether the maker has a newer one on the way.
What does the ranking leave out?
Loft, bounce, grind, length, shaft and gapping from your pitching wedge are not in the score, even though our catalog lists loft, bounce and grind options for most wedges. It also does not read your tempo, your miss or your ball flight for wedges, so this page does not ask for them, and it cannot see your turf, your bunkers or how you like to open the face. Treat the three wedges as a short list to try.
